PT Unggul’s Sustainability Policy
Introduction
Bioethanol is the mostly used biofuel worldwide and it significantly contributes to the reduction of crude oil consumption and environmental pollution. PT Unggul’s bioethanol will be used as fuel mixer for petrol to reduce CO2 emissions in support of Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to reduce Indonesia’s emissions by 29% by 2030.
PT Unggul will use sustainable agricultural methods to develop cassava crops as the feed stock for its bio-ethanol production. These crops will be managed in a way that respects the environment and impacted communities to ensure the long health of the ecosystems in which we operate.
PT Unggul will strive to meet the highest standards in terms of sustainability and transparency. Our actions will be guided by this policy which follows best practice standards for sustainability and transparency. Our intention is to set the benchmark high and to be the responsible leader in the development of this new Industry. We will go beyond the industry-recognized sustainability standards. We want to leave a better world for our children and grandchildren.
Sustainability Priorities
PT Unggul is fully committed to reducing environmental and social risks and impacts and preserving forests through sustainable bioethanol production. We are committed to building a traceable, transparent and sustainable bioethanol production and supply chain and ensure pro-active communication and engagement with its key stakeholders.
PT Unggul is fully committed to:
- Compliance with all applicable legislation as well as regulatory and industry codes of conduct;
- Respect for biodiversity, human rights, community development and social impact;
- Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions;
- Establishment of traceable supply chains; and
- Striving for the highest levels of transparency and stakeholder engagement.
It is a Top Priority for us to make sure that we produce Bioethanol considering all environmental and sustainability aspects in order to minimize negative environmental impacts, maximise the reduction of Greenhouse Gases and promote the welfare of workers and the communities in and around our project.
Sustainability Commitments
Environmental Certification
PT Unggul is committed to certification of its cropping and processing facilities to applicable international recognized sustainability standards. PT will attain certification within 3 years of commencement of operations.
Legal Compliance and Code of Conduct
PT Unggul will:
- Identify and comply with the legal requirements for agricultural operations;
- Ensure it has obtained all relevant land tenure and land use permits; and
- Conduct its business in a fair and ethical manner that refers to our ethical conduct policy.
Positive Environmental Performance
PT Unggul will:
- Identify and protect High Conservation Value (HCV) areas and High Carbon Stock (HCS) forest across our properties;
- Identify and conserve any peatland;
- Minimize the carbon footprint with a plan to reduce GHG emissions throughout all our operations;
- Implement the no-burning policy throughout all its operational activities; and
- Enforce the prohibition and phasing out on the use of paraquat, and pesticides that are categorized as World Health Organization (WHO) Class 1A or 1B (existing or new).
Promoting Human Rights and Health and Safety at the Workplace
PT Unggul will:
- Respect and secure the rights of all workers, in accordance with international initiatives and standards such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) core conventions, United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights , IFC Performance Standards on labour and working conditions (PS 2).
- Practice ethical recruitment using fair conditions;
- Respect workers’ freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining;
- Respect workers’ freedom of association, promote workforce diversity and prohibit any form of harassment, child labour and forced labour; and,
- Promote safe and healthy working conditions across all our operational activities.
Community Development, Smallholder Inclusion and Social Impact
PT Unggul will:
- Respect land tenure rights and the rights of indigenous people and local communities by following the Free, Prior and Informed Consultation (FPIC) process.
- Strive to achieve a responsible and amicable resolution of grievances and conflicts with all parties;
- Drive positive social impact and community livelihoods pro-actively and in a participative way;
- Engage effectively and transparently with communities; and
- Conduct regular and credible assessment of the effectiveness of such interventions, and where required adopt the necessary adjustments to minimise negative impacts.
Pathway to Sustainability
Implementation of our Sustainability Policy will commence in conjunction with operational planning and involve:
- Identification of the best and most relevant pathway to certification that meets our needs and then attain certification within 3 years of commencement of operations.
- Integrated conservation and development planning activities.
- Social mapping of impacted communities and commencement of Free, Prior and Informed Consultation (FPIC) processes.
- Development and implementation of an integrated Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP).
